Mercato Metropolitano has been granted a temporary Planning Permission for five years to build a covered community food market on the former Chadwick Road Carpark to the rear of Redbridge Town Hall.

Mercato Metropolitano seeks to create a contemporary and

inclusive urban market space with the following core values:

The proposals for the Ilford site will see the design and implementation of a covered market in Ilford town centre to create an inclusive public space dedicated to a broad cross-section of the population throughout the day and evening.

Circular Economy Principals are considered throughout the design, construction and running of the project whereby materials and resources are kept in use for as long

as possible, waste is designed out, and regenerative, circular systems are put in place.

​

This approach is very much in line with Redbridge Council’s manifesto vision of an ‘Ilford for all’. The brief is:

- To create an urban destination that
will bring together members of the community in the celebration of natural and healthy food

- To use the unique adaptable space for a number of uses including community events, music, urban farming, and studio space

- Be a key addition to the exciting regeneration of Ilford Town Centre
